Where can I get ear wax removal in Doncaster?
At Doncaster Clinics — Hyde Park Pharmacy on Carr House Road near the town centre, or Askern Pharmacy on Church Street, which also opens Saturday mornings. You book directly and see a GPhC-registered pharmacist in a private room. No GP referral is needed.
What is microsuction, and is it better than syringing?
Microsuction uses a fine suction tube under direct vision to lift wax out, rather than flushing the ear with water. It's the method most ENT departments now use, and it suits people who can't have irrigation — including anyone with a perforated eardrum, grommets or previous ear surgery.
Does microsuction hurt?
It shouldn't. It's loud, because the suction is close to your eardrum, and it can feel strange or make you cough. If anything is actually painful, tell us and we stop.
Do I need to use drops first?
It helps. Olive oil drops twice a day for three to five days soften the wax and make the appointment quicker and more comfortable. If you haven't used any, come anyway and we'll see how we get on — occasionally we'll ask you to soften and return.
How long does the appointment take?
About 20 minutes. The suction itself is usually only a few minutes per ear; the rest is examining both ears before and after, and talking you through what we found.
Do you check both ears?
Yes. Both ears are examined before anything is removed, even if only one feels blocked, because wax on the other side is common and easier to deal with in the same visit.
What happens if there's no wax to remove?
We tell you, and we look at what else might be causing the symptom rather than sending you away none the wiser. If it needs a GP, an audiologist or ENT, we'll say so.
Can I have microsuction if I wear hearing aids or have had ear surgery?
Usually yes — and microsuction is often the preferred method in those situations because it's done under direct vision. Hearing aid users are among the people it helps most, as wax builds up faster and makes the aid whistle. Tell us your history when you book.
Can I get ear wax removal free on the NHS?
Many GP practices in South Yorkshire no longer routinely offer ear wax removal, which is why pharmacy clinics exist for it. It's worth asking your practice first if you'd rather not pay — we won't be offended.
When should I see a GP instead of booking?
If you have sudden hearing loss over hours or days, discharge, bleeding, fever or severe ear pain, or you've had recent ear surgery, contact your GP or NHS 111 rather than booking with us. If you've already booked and any of these apply, ring us and we'll cancel it without charge.
